MURDER CHARGE

A Johnston man has been charged with a recent murder in Providence.

Police allege Zakery Khamvongsa, 21, of Plainfield St., shot 22-year-old Anthony Michell last week outside of a busy market as he was leaving near the Hartford Park Projects. Providence police said Khamvongsa was recognized at the scene and was arrested on a warrant at a relative’s house in Silver Lake on Sunday night.

Police said the motive for the shooting was unclear and that Mitchell may not have been the intended target.

Khamvongsa was on probation for drug and vehicle tampering charges and was arraigned Monday in District Court. Mitchell had been trouble in New York and in Rhode Island and was charged with breaking into the L & M Minimart in Central Falls last year. A month ago, Mitchell told police that he was hit in the head with a brick and knocked him unconscious at the Hartford Park project. Facebook posting by Mitchell suggest that gang activity was behind the attacks.

FATALITY

Deputy Police Chief Daniel Parrillo reports that a North Smithfield woman was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital on Monday after her car struck a tractor trailer on Plainfield Pike.

Police said the 2002 Mercury sedan hit the rear tires and undercarriage of the trailer as it pulled out of Cosantini Brothers Transport at 2077 Plainfield Pike around 3:40 a.m.

Ploice said it was unclear where Dorothea Beaumier, 71, was coming from at the time of the accident and it remains under investigation.

HIT AND RUN

Patrolman Mario Mennella reports a hit-and-run accident on Atwood Avenue around 7:30 p.m. on Dec 16 that led him to an apartment building at 330 Simmonsville Ave. looking for the man who was seen fleeing the scene of the accident. He said he met the man he was looking for outside his apartment, and the man reportedly said, “I can’t lie to you. I was in an accident and like a dope I ran away.”

Felix Marinelli Sr., 77, was taken to headquarters, where he reportedly told police he went to a walk-in clinic because he wasn’t feeling well and was treated and released. He is said to have told police he was looking at the paperwork for the visit when he ran into another vehicle near 1500 Atwood Ave. He reportedly said he panicked and fled the area.

Marinelli was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and obstructing an officer, and held pending an investigation into his possibly being a bail violator stemming from a breaking and entering and assault charge from August of this year.

PLATE LIGHT OUT

Sgt. Joseph Salvadore reports stopping a car from Massachusetts for having the rear license plate light out on Plainfield Street on Dec. 21 and ultimately arresting the driver for possession of a controlled substance.

Salvadore said the driver was reaching into her purse when he saw and unmarked prescription bottle inside. He said asked her what the pills were for, and she reportedly said she took them to “calm her down” and she bought them in New Bedford. Salvadore said the pills were identified as Xanex, a controlled substance, and Nicole M. Darosa, 31, of 617 County St. in New Bedford, was charged with possession and driving in possession of a controlled substance. She was later released on $5,000 personal recognizance.

POLE BANGING

Patrolman David Loffler reports he went to the scene of an accident between a pickup and a utility pole on Greenville Avenue around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 20.

Loffler said the driver was reluctant to talk about the accident, but a witness said he was behind the truck when it swerved and went straight into the pole. He said a check on the driver revealed she had a suspended license. He said the driver’s side rear wheel had its tire off and was running on its rim when the accident occurred.

Jennifer L. Thibault, 41, of 25 Marshall St. in Providence, was charged with driving on a suspended license and transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of minor injuries from the crash.
