EXPLOSION

Patrolman Charles M. Psilopoulos reports being called to the area of 89 Celia St. (Schnitzer Northeast) for a report of an explosion shortly after 7 a.m. on March 28.

Upon arrival, the patrolman spoke with the facilities operations supervisor, who advised that a small explosion occurred when a vehicle was placed onto a conveyor to be crushed. The supervisor reportedly said a fuel tank or similar object must have been overlooked inside the vehicle prior to its being placed on the conveyor.

HOW THEY

GET CAUGHT

Patrolman Michael Protano reports observing a Jeep Grand Cherokee drive onto Hartford Avenue in reverse from a driveway and cross the westbound, middle and eastbound lanes shortly after 8:30 p.m. on April 1. The vehicle began traveling eastbound in front of Protano’s cruiser, and he stopped the Jeep at the Borden Avenue intersection. The operator reportedly told the patrolman she was “just going to the market.” Subsequent checks revealed she had a suspended license, along with an active bench warrant in Third District Court for failing to appear for sentencing on a driving with a suspended license charge from the Johnston Police Department.

Candice Fusco, 27, of 1149 Hartford Ave., was taken into custody and transported to headquarters to await arraignment, after which she was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail. She was issued summonses for driving after denial, suspension or revocation of a license and improper backing, and the Jeep was towed from the scene.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE

At approximately 9:45 p.m. on March 28, Patrolman Michael Protano reports being on a fixed post at 807 Hartford Ave. (B&D Plastics) when he observed a white Ford Escort parked directly behind Sunny Hill Farm on the trailer park property. He observed the vehicle as it backed up from a parking space, shut its headlights off and quickly pulled back into the same spot.

Based on the suspicious behavior, the patrolman detained the vehicle and identified two occupants, a male and female. The woman said she was dropping off her boyfriend at his aunt’s trailer. A subsequent check revealed an active no-contact order in which the male occupant was listed as the plaintiff and the female occupant was listed as the defendant.

Ashley R. Benevides, 22, of 69.5 East Main St. in West Warwick, was taken into custody without incident for violating the no-contact order and held as a probation violator for two pending cases. She was later transported to the ACI following her arraignment.

A check also revealed the male occupant, Daniel J. Choquette, 25, of 39 Waveland St. in Johnston, was wanted on an active Third District Court bench warrant for failure to appear on a domestic disorderly conduct charge out of West Warwick. He was also taken into custody. Arrangements were made for Choquette’s aunt to retrieve the vehicle.

BUCKLE UP

Patrolman Kevin Brady reports being on a fixed post in the area of Killingly and Waveland streets shortly after 1 p.m. on March 26 when he observed a vehicle traveling south on Killingly with a front passenger not wearing a seat belt. The vehicle was stopped, and subsequent checks revealed the operator had a suspended license and a pair of active warrants – one out of Pawtucket for driving with a suspended license, and one out of Central Falls for receiving stolen goods.

Luis C. Gasparico, 28, of 23 Randall St. in Cranston, was arrested without incident on the warrants. He was also issued summonses for a passenger not wearing a seatbelt and driving with a suspended license.

The vehicle’s passenger was its registered owner and had an active license, and drove the vehicle from the scene without incident.
