CHARGE

Patrolman Derrick Palazzo reports responding to a call regarding an erratic operator on Plainfield Pike at approximately 9:10 p.m. on April 30. Dispatch advised the vehicle had been described as a silver sedan with heavy front-end damage and a flat front tire, and that it had last been seen in the Hess gas station parking lot.

Upon arrival, Palazzo reports the Johnston Fire Department was at the scene, and a man was attempting to change the front driver’s side tire of a silver Mitsubishi. Fire personnel spoke with the man, determined there were no medical issues, and cleared the scene.

Palazzo reports approaching the man and observing him to be “extremely unsteady on his feet.” He further reports the man’s speech was slurred, and that when the man began walking toward him, he staggered and almost fell.

Closer examination revealed the man’s eyes were bloodshot, Palazzo reports, and he emanated a strong odor of alcoholic beverage. According to the patrolman, the man said only that he was coming from Providence, but did not explain the damage to his vehicle.

At this point, Palazzo reports, two men approached and advised that the silver vehicle had entered the gas station at a high rate of speed, struck a curb, continued through the parking lot and taken a right turn onto Plainfield Street. At that point, the men told the patrolmen, the vehicle “went left of center, struck a curb and continued back into the parking lot,” coming to a stop where the responding public safety personnel had found it.

Palazzo reports he then asked the man at the scene to submit to field sobriety tests, to which he consented. The man was unsteady on his feet and had difficulty concentrating during the tests, according to the patrolman, and testing was terminated for the man’s safety.

The man was at that point placed under arrest. An open, partially filled can of Budweiser beer was found during a search of the vehicle, according to Palazzo. The man was transported to police headquarters, where he reportedly refused a chemical test and was belligerent and vulgar toward officers.

Robert A. Paolo Jr., 54, of 30 Howard Ave. in Cranston, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (first offense), refusing to submit to a chemical test, and two counts of receiving stolen goods.

LARCENY

CHARGE

Patrolman Remy Mendez reports responding to a call regarding a larceny from a motor vehicle at approximately 9:50 a.m. on Jan. 25. At the scene, the reporting party indicated the tailgate of his Chevy S10 had been stolen sometime overnight.

Detective Thomas Dwyer reports interviewing a party on April 27 who indicated he had purchased a tailgate matching the one in question from his motorcycle mechanic sometime between the end of January and the beginning of February. The man told police he paid $140 for the tailgate.

Police confirmed the tailgate the man had purchased was the stolen one, according to Dwyer, and it was returned to the owner. An arrest warrant was drafted for the man who had sold the stolen tailgate.

Steven S. Sarchione, 29, of 29 Auburn Ave. in Johnston, was arrested May 1. He is charged with larceny under $1,500 and receiving stolen goods.
