Pie in the sky: Fat Boys Pizza gives away thousands of free slices on opening weekend

Although Fat Boys Pizza didn’t quite reach its goal of giving away 5,000 slices during last weekend’s unique grand opening, owners James “JP” Rutkovsky, Ezra Spitzer-Williams and business partner Joe Ramos got very close.

“We gave away 4,674 slices of pizza,” Rutkovsky said Monday. “We’re thrilled. This place [located at 1426 Hartford Ave.] was crazy. The numbers we did were much, much better than expected.”

Thus, Fat Boys Pizza may just have established a Johnston record – if not Rhode Island – for giving away the largest number of free pizza slices in a 72-hour period.

“It’s really had to tell how many pounds of dough we made,” Rutkovsky said. “We stayed late every day and night. We also made lots ands lots of bread. I can tell you that every pizza has 10 slices, and that means we gave away almost 500 pizzas.”

Rutkovsky was more excited about the comments people were making about Fat Boys Pizza, which is a thin crispy crust made from hand-stretched dough.

“Our new customers seem to really like our pizza,” he added. “We’ve got texts from all kinds of people ... the police and fire departments are ordering here every day. We are obviously humbled by the way we’ve been welcomed to Johnston.”

Mayor Joseph Polisena joined in that warm welcome last Friday when he performed the ceremonial ribbon cutting at the eatery.

“This place is beautiful,” Polisena told a small audience that included Rutkovsky’s father, Jim, who drove from his home in Mystic, Conn., to help work the grand opening promotion. “It’s also a great location for yet another new business in town.”

Fat Boys Pizza is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers a variety of sandwiches, salads and other great foods in addition to its signature New York style pizza. The restaurant can be reached at 401-272-4242.
