The Johnston girls’ soccer team was already in the midst of a resurgence before the postseason started.
Now the Panthers are in the midst of something even greater.
Coming off consecutive winless seasons, Johnston burst back onto the scene with an 8-win regular season, earning it the No. 5 seed in the postseason.
Last Wednesday, the Panthers picked up their first postseason win since 2006 when they beat Central Falls 4-0. Leah Gravel scored three times and Gabriella Scarcella added a goal as well.
Two days later, Johnston upset No. 4 St. Raphael 3-1 for a spot in the semifinals. The Panthers overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with three goals in the second half – two from Gravel and one from Natalie DeAngelis. St. Ray’s was undefeated entering the game, having gone 13-0 during the regular season.
Johnston’s next opponent was No. 1 North Providence, another unbeaten team. That game was scheduled for Wednesday, with results unavailable at press time. The other semifinal was being played between Middletown and West Warwick
With a win, the Panthers would advance to the Division II championship game, held on Saturday at 7 p.m. Rhode Island College. (Sun Rise photos by Kevin Pomeroy)
