The Johnston wrestling team placed three wrestlers in the semifinals and one in the finals at the state meet on Friday and Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, en route to amassing 71 points and placing 10th out of 34 teams.

Jon Soto made it to the semifinals at 138 on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, he fell to the eventual state champion, Andrew Howard, from Moses Brown. Soto did battle back though, defeating Coventry’s Nathan Brown for third place, earning a spot at New England’s this weekend.

Jesse Ribezzo placed fourth in the 152-pound weight class. Ribezzo lost to Hendricken’s Anthony DiMauro in the semifinals, before narrowly missing New England’s with a loss to Westerly’s Shane Short for third place.

The Panthers got their best finish from Mike Caparco in the 145-pound weight class. Caparco powered his way to the finals, defeating a tough John Arruda from Hendricken in the semifinals.

Caparco went on to fall to Cranston West’s Max O’Connell in the finals, placing second. O’Connell won the state title at 138 last year, before moving up a weight class this season.

Caparco and Soto will wrestle at New England’s this weekend at North Andover High School in North Andover, Mass., as the top three wrestlers from each weight class qualified for the New England Championships.
