Panthers holding steady

It’s been a back-and-forth start to the season for the Johnston girls’ soccer team, but the Panthers grabbed a point this past weekend from a comparable Cranston East team.

Playing at home, Johnston fought the ’Bolts to a 0-0 tie. Amber Dion made six saves in net for the Panthers, who couldn’t find a way to get a ball past East keeper Stephanie Groccia. Groccia made four saves.

Johnston was back in action Tuesday, where it lost 4-3 to Middletown. Zoe Griffin, Renee DeAngelis and Samantha Hardman all scored, while Leah Gravel and Jocelyn Cabral added assists, but it wasn’t quite enough to get past the Islanders.

The Panthers are now into the middle of their schedule, as they’re 3-3-2 and in fourth place in Division III-A. Their 11 points trails only West Warwick’s 13, Middletown’s 16 and unbeaten North Providence’s 19.

Their next game is Monday when they host winless Tolman at 6 p.m.
