Joseph Anderson and Louis Cotoia III recently became the newest members of the Johnston Police Department during a special swearing in ceremony the Community College of Rhode Island’s Flanagan Campus Fieldhouse in Lincoln.

Just minutes after Anderson and Cotoia graduated from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy, Mayor Joseph Polisena welcomed both new officers and administered the oath of office inside a special use room at CCRI.

“You’re joining one of the best police departments in New England,” the mayor told the new officers.

Police Chief Richard S. Tamburini and Deputy Chief Daniel O. Parrillo also assisted Polisena during the formal part of the installation ceremony, which featured well-wishes from such ranking officers as Maj. Joseph Razza, Capt. Matthew G. LeDuc, and Capt. Richard C. Norato.

“I’m proud to welcome these two fine officers who are also Johnston residents,” Polisena said. “Congratulations, again – and I know your families are both proud of your accomplishment.”

Polisena said the new officers are filling vacant positions, and do not represent an expansion of the 67-strong force. Both officers will serve a one-year probationary period.

Prior to enrolling in the Police Academy, Anderson worked at Home Depot after graduating from Johnston High School. Among those family members taking part in Anderson’s post-swearing in ceremony were his father and mother, Daniel and Aurelia Anderson, and grandmother Marianna Scorpio.

Cotoia, meanwhile, worked with his father Louis Cotoia Jr.’s investment building company. He is a graduate of both Johnston High School and the Community College of Rhode Island. Joining him during the post graduation ceremony were his father and mother, Louis Jr. and Joanna Cotoia, sister Stephanie Cotoia, and grandfather and grandmother, Louis Sr. and Dianna Cotoia.
