The Knights’ baseball team traveled to Newport on Tuesday to play against the Rams of the Naval Academy Prep School. CCRI was able to defeat Navy Prep by the score of 10-1 and put its record at 12-9 on the year.

The Knights’ offensive attack was led by sophomore Austin Barry (North Kingstown, R.I.), who went 4-for-5 on the day and finished with three RBI. Co-captain Eddie Apice (North Kingstown, R.I.) had two hits on the day, while scoring twice and knocking in one run. James Riley-Garnett, who is from Newport, had a nice day in his hometown, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Dave Hopkins (East Greenwich, R.I.) had an interesting stat day, as he had a hit and two RBI, while also pitching one scoreless inning and striking out two. Wally Luna (Providence, R.I.) started the game for the Knights and went a solid five innings, striking out eight batters along the way and earning the win.

“Our team defense has been stellar and it showed again today, putting up another zero in the error column,” Knights’ head coach Ken Hopkins said. “Doing the little things goes a long way in baseball.”

Lady Knights swept by Monroe

The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team hosted the Mustangs of Monroe College from New Rochelle, N.Y. for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Lady Knights lost two slugfests, 10-5, and 14-7. With the losses, the Lady Knights’ record is back to .500 at 4-4.

Game 1: CCRI-5 Monroe- 10

The Lady Knights were trailing, 6-0, going into the third, and their bats were quiet, compiling just one single from co-captain Maxine DeLuise (Warwick, R.I.) through the first two.

Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, R.I.) led off the third with a single, followed by a single by freshman Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, R.I.).

Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, R.I.) sacrifice bunted the two runners into scoring position and co-captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, R.I.) had an RBI single, scoring Fernandez, trimming the deficit to 6-1.

The Mustangs answered with two runs in the fourth.

Ashley Spear (Harrisville, R.I.) led off the fourth with a walk, Jenna Urso (West Warwick, R.I.) then doubled and Rodriguez added an RBI single and advanced to second. Rousseau then walked to load the bases and Butler stroked a two-RBI single, followed by a DeLuise RBI single that made it 8-5 Monroe, which is as close as CCRI would get, eventually losing by the count of 10-5.

The Lady Knights’ offense was led by Butler, DeLuise and Rodriguez, who each had two hits apiece.

Game 2: CCRI- 7 Monroe- 14

The Lady Knights got themselves into a hole early, once again, trailing by three runs after the first two innings, 8-5, in another slugfest. Monroe extended its lead to as many as nine late in the game. CCRI did answer with two more runs to fall by the final count of 14-7.

Leading the offensive attack for CCRI in the second game was Rousseau (Richmond, R.I.) with a three-run home run, two runs scored, three RBI and a stolen base. Rodriguez (North Kingstown, R.I.) added two hits, including a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Also contributing was Butler with two hits, Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, R.I.) with two hits and a run scored and sophomore Rebecca Edwards (North Attleboro, Mass.) added a double and a run scored to help lead the Lady Knights’ attack.

The Lady Knights scored two runs in the first, as Rousseau led off with a walk and took second on a passed ball. Butler singled, putting runners on first and third. Butler then got into a rundown, which allowed Rousseau to score from third base. DeLuise walked and took second on a passed ball and later scored on Jess Spargo’s RBI single. The Lady Knights scored three runs in the second inning, all with two outs.

Brosnahan and Rodriguez singled, then Rousseau connected for her first collegiate home run, a three-run bomb to deep left-center.

CCRI’s bats went quiet again until the seventh inning. Edwards pinch hit for Urso and led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Brosnahan then singled and Rodriguez doubled, scoring Edwards, while Brosnahan was thrown out at the plate also trying to score. Though CCRI scored two in the seventh, it still fell by the final count of 14-7.
