Joy Fox, of Warwick, whose first news media experience came as a Bayview Academy student at Beacon Communications and who later after graduating from college went on to become a Warwick Beacon reporter and then editor of the Cranston Herald, will be leaving the governor’s office next month, according to an announcement made Tuesday.

Fox, Gov. Gina Raimondo’s director of communications, will be leaving to work with former U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin.

According to a release, Fox will serve as senior advisor to Rubin and support various projects and initiatives relating to economic policy and growth. His portfolio of projects ranges from climate change to fiscal matters and criminal justice reform, among others.

The governor’s office announced Fox’s pending departure and that of Chief of Staff Steve Neuman, who is joining the staff of Hillary Clinton.

“I am grateful for Joy’s tireless work on behalf of the people of Rhode Island, and I wish her all the best on this next exciting step in her career,” Raimondo said in a statement. “On a personal level, as my longest serving team member, I will miss having her good counsel every day, but I know no matter where the world takes her, she loves Rhode Island, and will continue to keep her eye on the work we are doing to create opportunities for all Rhode Islanders.”

Fox, who left the Cranston Herald to become communications director for Congressman James Langevin, joined Raimondo when she ran for the office of general treasurer.

“After five rewarding years of working with Governor Raimondo, I am excited about this wonderful opportunity to work on some of the same issues on a national level,” Fox said in a statement.

Mike Raia, who joined the Raimondo administration in March 2015 to lead communications for the Executive Office of Health and Human Services, will step into the position of communications director. Raia will start July 11.

Neuman leaves for the Clinton campaign on June 24. David Cruise of the governor’s office will transition to acting chief of staff.

“Steve served as our tireless leader through the passage of two successful budgets, the implementation of Medicaid reform, and the creation of new economic development tools to get our state back in the game,” Raimondo said in a statement.
