Aaron Muniz was knocked out by Marqus Bates in the first round of his pro debut at CES Boxing’s season opener at Twin River Casino on Saturday night. The match was scheduled for four rounds between the two junior welterweights.

Muniz entered the ring to “Victory” by the Notorious B.I.G. and Sean “Diddy” Combs. The southpaw wore white trunks and his long hair was in braids.

The rookie suffered the knockout one minute, 30 seconds into the first round. Muniz’s manager Jeremy Mitchell believes that the boxer will get into the ring again. According to Mitchell, Muniz had his knee checked out by a doctor and he confirmed that the boxer suffered a torn meniscus during the battle.

Round 1 started quiet with both fighters feeling each other out. Then, Bates stepped forward before throwing a flurry of punches at Muniz. Next, Muniz threw a jab and Bates countered with a hard right hook to the head of Muniz. Bates was able to get Muniz in the corner and continued to pound on him until Muniz escaped.

Muniz looked wild, coming up empty on a couple punches before he connected with a left jab. Then, Bates landed an onslaught of body shots and Muniz looked overwhelmed and moved away. The fighters got tangled up before the referee pushed them apart. Bates could smell victory and went on the offensive again, unleashing another flurry of punches on Muniz and forcing him down to one knee. Muniz was unable to get back to his feet before the 10 count, so the referee awarded Bates with the knockout.
