Posted

Social Security income strategies was the topic of discussion as Money Smart Week wrapped up April 15 at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library in Johnston.

Jeffrey Massey, a certified financial planner and the founder and president of Massey and Associates of Lincoln, was guest speaker at the event.

Massey outlined some basic ideas and planning strategies that could increase Social Security income by thousands of dollars each year for couples and surviving spouses. He discussed topics such as taking Social Security benefits early, the advantages of taking them later, the best plan for securing a maximum benefit to a surviving spouse, how other income affects benefits, and taxes.

His talk finished the Money Smart Week series that started on Saturday, April 5.

The series featured talks and information on money and finance and was held in libraries and non-profit organizations throughout Rhode Island.

Money Smart Week was developed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago along with the American Library Association. Locally, it was sponsored by the RI Collegeboundfund, working with the Rhode Island Library Association and the office of General Treasurer Gina Raimondo.
