Mayor, local composer featured in October WSO concerts

Posted

Narrations by Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian and the world premier of local composer Peter Dutilly’s “Jubilee” will be featured in the opening concerts of the Warwick Symphony Orchestra’s 50th anniversary season this month.

The dramatized story of the city of Warwick, along with selected music of the mid-Sixties, will headline the historic concert season series.

The concerts will recall popular melodies from the year of the launch of the WSO, including those of the Beatles, Sinatra, and the hit TV series “Star Trek.” This fall season is the first of four in a series of anniversary concerts, beginning in October at Cranston’s Scottish Rite Auditorium on Oct. 15, and at Warwick’s Tollgate High School Auditorium on Oct. 16.

The WSO is the oldest continuously performing regional orchestra of volunteer musicians in the Ocean State. Founded by Warwick music educator George Low in 1966, its performances throughout the state of classical and pop music have grown in popularity and respect as dedicated professional and amateur musicians have joined its ranks.

Led by music director Catherine Gagnon, the performances in October are scheduled for the following locations:

Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Scottish Rite Auditorium, 2115 Broad St., Cranston

Sunday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at Tollgate High School Shapiro Auditorium, 575 Centerville Road, Warwick

Tickets and additional information are available online at wsori.org or at the door. General admission is $10 per person, and children under 12 are free.

The full program for the performances will include:

“Introduction and Gopak” (Hopak) from Fair at Sorochinsky by Mussorgsky

“Ballet Parisienne” by Offenbach

Selections from “Camelot” by Lerner & Loewe, arranged by Bennett

“Star Trek Through the Years” arranged by Custer
