A Providence man has been charged in connection with the assault and attempted robbery of a 15-year-old on a bike path in town.

David J. Ledee-Rodriguez, 25, of 964 Atwells Ave., Apt. 2 in Providence, was arraigned Tuesday on counts of attempted second-degree robbery, assault with intent to commit a robbery and disorderly conduct and ordered held on $40,000 bail with surety.

The incident that led to the charges occurred Monday. In his narrative report, Patrolman Robert H. Cardoza said he responded with other officers to the bike path in the area of 2 Greenville Ave. at approximately 4:30 p.m. that day for a report of a robbery in which a firearm was displayed.

At the scene, Cardoza said the teenager told police he had been traveling west on the bike path when two men confronted him. The teenager told police one of the men struck him in the face and asked if he had any money, and when he said he did not, the second man removed a pistol from his waistline and threatened to shoot him.

Johnston and Providence police conducted a search of the area, according to Cardoza’s report, and Providence Police Officer Kevin Costa located a male matching the description of the first suspect standing on a sidewalk on Manton Avenue in Providence. That man, later identified as Ledee-Rodriguez, was unarmed, and was taken into custody.

Johnston Maj. Frank Levesque said police continue to seek the second suspect.
