Locally made kids' movie `The Return of Brute Force' to premiere on June 11

Independent film director Brett Davey took a different approach when planning his latest movie. He asked his sons Timothy and Van – aged 9 and 12 – to star in the movie, help develop the story, and recruit their friends as actors.

The result is “The Return of Brute Force”, which will have its world premiere on Saturday, June 11, at 4 p.m. at the Columbus Theatre, 270 Broadway in Providence.

The movie is about the students of Scarpa Elementary School who take on a group of bullies called “Brute Force” while battling an evil charter school looking to take over their school.

Primary filming on “The Return of Brute Force” started in July 2015 and concluded in the spring of 2016.

For Davey, a lot of fun – and challenges – arose from filming a group of children over the course of nine months.

“I encouraged the cast to be creative and many of the funniest parts of the movie came from ideas they had,” he said. “The biggest challenge was the growth spurts some of the kids had and the occasional haircut right before shooting days that changed their look.”

Davey looked at the movie as a learning experience for the children involved, both in front of and behind the camera. Many of the children in the cast took turns holding the boom microphone and lights, or performed other production duties during the filming. Delia Maguire, a neighbor who is a student at Cranston East High School, was the assistant director and script supervisor during the filming.

The movie was written, directed and produced by Davey, who works full-time as director of communications for CharterCARE Health Partners.

“The Return of Brute Force” is his fifth feature film. The movie features an original soundtrack from Rhode Island musicians Damian Puerini, Joe Principe, Glenn Robinson, and Dylan Sevey.
