The CCRI Knights traveled to the Bronx, N.Y. to take on the Knights of Globe Institute of Technology on Saturday. CCRI’s hot three-point shooting propelled them to a 96-92 victory. With the win, CCRI’s record improves to 10-9 on the season. The loss drops Globe’s record to 5-10.

CCRI came out on fire as sophomore tri-captains Jerome Harris (Hartford, Conn.) and Malieke Young (Providence, R.I.) combined for six first-half three-pointers. Harris drained four, while Young hit two. The Knights of Globe were able to hang close to CCRI until the Knights put a run together to end the first half up 12 points with the score 47-35. In the second half, CCRI upped its lead to 18 points, 62-44, with 16 minutes left in the game, mostly due to its tenacious zone defense and patience on offense.

However, Globe would not relent and kept chipping away at the lead, as it whittled it down to 10 points with five minutes to go. Globe’s pressure defense caused several CCRI turnovers and it trimmed the lead down to two points, 94-92.

But sophomore tri-captain Anthony Jernigan (East Hartford, Conn.) made a steal and got fouled with 14 seconds left, and he calmly made both free throws to put CCRI up 96-92. The Knights fouled a Globe shooter with three seconds on the clock, but the shooter missed both free throws. CCRI got the rebound on the second miss to secure the victory.

The Knights had all of their starting five score in double- figures, led by Young’s 22 points, including a game-high six three-pointers, four of which came in the second half. He was followed by Harris’ 20 points with four first-half three’s, while freshman big man Mahda Brewah (Dover, Del.) added 17 points with seven rebounds. Jernigan had 15 points, successfully converting an impressive 11-of-12 from the free throw line with five assists. Freshman center Grant Gillis (Jamestown, R.I.) added 14 points with a team-high nine boards.

“This was a very nice win on the road against a very tough Division I team,” Knights’ head coach Rick Harris said. “Our team defense was excellent and our patience on offense created a lot of good scoring opportunities for our shooters. Malieke and Jerome shot the ball very well. It certainly is nice to play well on the road and anytime we beat a DI team we’re happy.”

The Knights were set to return to Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse to take on Sacred Heart University’s club team on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Results were unavailable at press time.
