Johnston’s Russo heading to America’s Homecoming Queen competition in Tenn.

Taylor Russo received a variety of votes during her undergraduate years at Johnston High School.

The daughter of Chuck and Karen Russo, she was elected to the Student Council, and last fall, during her senior year, she was voted the school’s Homecoming Queen.

From there, she won the prestigious crown of Rhode Island’s Homecoming Queen for 2015.

Now, Russo – who will attend Salve Regina University in September – is hoping for some more votes in her bid to win a national title.

Russo will leave Monday for Memphis, Tenn., where she’ll compete on the largest stage of her life – the prestigious national finals of the America’s Homecoming Queen Pageant.

The competition runs from July 22-26 at the University of Memphis’ Rose Theatre, and regardless of how she finishes, Russo will receive some form of scholarship from the highly acclaimed, non-profit scholarship program, which prides itself in helping the leaders of tomorrow begin their post-secondary education.

Russo – who participated in countless activities at Johnston High, including the Susan Parillo-coached Panthers football cheerleading squad – is headed for the America’s Homecoming Queen contest with a high-powered resume. And while the judging will be difficult, she’s more then ready to show her stuff against 49 other state homecoming queens.

“We are looking for the All-American girl who wants a career,” reads a line from the contest manual. “Our judges are selected form the fields of education, travel, and public relations and are committee to the welfare of the youth of this nation.”

Russo, who is busy packing, explained she has been “asked to create a video showcasing Rhode Island and all the wonderful things within it, along with things that are important to me.” She’ll also have a give a speech about her home state.

“I cannot wait for this experience of a lifetime,” said Russo, who will be accompanied by her mother. “I am grateful to be part of such a large event and accomplishment. I’m going to the nationals with hopes of wining a scholarship. Please, everyone, support me with your vote.”

“I know I will represent our state to the best of my ability,” she said. “Hopefully, I can bring back some sort of win for Rhode Island.”
