Johnston High School's National Honor Society passes the torch with pride

On the evening of Wednesday, May 11, Johnston Senior High School held its annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Our exceptional advisor, Miss Jean Picano, coordinated the night’s program.

National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students are eligible to become inducted into National Honor Society in grades 10 to 12.

During the ceremony, candles are lit to highlight the core values of the National Honor Society (scholarship, character, service, and leadership). As each candle is lit, faculty council members, who include Mr. Jason Achilli, Mrs. Donna Palumbo, Mrs. Jennifer Sousa, Mr. Michael Taraborelli, and Mrs. Susan Volante, each read a definition of one of core values required of membership.

All new inductees of National Honor Society recite the organization’s pledge before being formally inducted into the school’s chapter. Senior society members are presented with their collars along with their graduation tassels.

This year, there were a total of 37 seniors, 17 juniors, and 27 sophomores inducted into the society. After the candidates are each awarded membership, the four senior officers ceremonially pass each of the four candles, symbolic of the pillars of the honor society, to the new officers.

The responsibilities of president will be passed on to Nour Abaherah from Ibrahim Abaherah. Vice president Erica Perkins passes the torch to Karla Gonzalez. Secretary Rachel Graziano will be succeeded by Vanida Singharath. Lastly, Joely Centracchio, public relations officer, will hand her role to Lindsey Frein. Junior National Honor Society officers will include Alyssa Johnson as president and Jacob Cooke and Jordan Morretti as co-vice presidents.

Musical selections throughout the evening were performed by Joely Centracchio, Davina Phouthakoun, and Diondra Stubbs. Speeches were given by president Ibrahim Abaherah and advisor Miss Jean Picano to close the ceremony.

After a remarkable year of service, the seniors now hand over their responsibilities to the newly inducted NHS and JNHS members; wishing them great success in fulfilling their duties. 1
