Johnston’s Caparco to play in R.I. All-Star Game

Posted

Johnston High School will host the R.I High School All-Star Football Game on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The game will feature some of the top talent from around the state split up into two teams – East and West.

For some playing, Saturday’s game will be the last time that they’ll throw on the pads, as many seniors who recently graduated won’t be continuing their playing careers.

The Panthers’ football team won’t be heavily represented, with senior quarterback Mike Caparco being the lone Johnston player representing his school.

Caparco, who captained the Panthers in the fall, led his team to a stunning upset over top-seeded St. Ray’s in the Division II quarterfinals back in November.

The Panthers then fell to eventual champion Moses Brown in the semifinals, but the victory over previously undefeated St. Ray’s was an outstanding accomplishment after a 3-4 regular season for Johnston.

Caparco will now look to continue that playoff magic on Saturday, as he’ll shoot for one more win before his high school career officially comes to a close.

Lang’s to hold scholarship fundraiser

Lang’s Bowlarama will be hosting the first annual “Ed Lang Memorial Scholarship Fund” Tournament to establish an annual college scholarship fund for a college bound bowler from the Providence Senate Junior Bowling program.

The tournament will be on June 28 at 11 a.m. and will cost $20 per bowler, with the hope to raise $5,000. The Providence Senate program is run by Marty Jones, the 2011 USBC National Bowling Coach of the Year.

Many of the junior bowlers from this program have gone on to national teams or secured significant college scholarships, including Gazmine Mason, the leadoff bowler for the Nebraska Huskers team that just won the NCAA National Championship.

Lang’s Bowlarama, long known as a local family entertainment and bowling center, is celebrating its 55th year in 2015. A series of events commemorating the anniversary kicked off in May and will run through to the actual anniversary in October.

The Ed Lang Memorial Scholarship Fund will take donations throughout the year and will seek to give a scholarship each year to a high school senior and junior bowler deserving of college assistance.
