Johnston lifter hits new record mark

Johnston’s Francesca Gaudiana broke another world record in powerlifting on March 29 at Ocean State Gym in Johnston.

The 16-year-old was coming off her basketball season at Johnston High School and had only four weeks to train for the lift, which she would try as part of the Elite Powerlifting Federation New England Championship. Despite the short turnaround, Gaudiana hit the mark she was hoping for with a deadlift of 320 pounds.

“She plays basketball so she really only had four weeks to train for this,” said trainer George Lazzareschi. “We weren’t even going to do this show. I said, ‘We don’t have time to train you.’ But she wanted to do it.”

The result was one of the most impressive feats in Gaudiana’s brief but decorated powerlifting career.

“It was incredible,” Lazzareschi said.

The next big event on Gaudiana’s calendar will be a World Championship show in November.
