Johnston boys’ soccer off to fast start

The Johnston boys’ soccer team kicked off its season in impressive fashion on Tuesday evening, rolling past Scituate 6-1 in its Division III opener.

The Panthers were led by sophomores Jack Frein and D.J. Anderson, who netted two goals apiece in the victory.

Senior Devon Atkinson also paced the offense with a goal and an assist, while Christian Arriaza got on the scoresheet with a goal and Henry Alvarez and Steve Gaunt chipped in with an assist apiece.

In net, junior Frank DeLeon stopped four of the five Scituate shots sent his way.

The win certainly marked a promising start for Johnston (6-6-2 in 2015), as it was able to come away victorious against one of D-III’s top teams from last season, with Scituate compiling a 10-4 record in 2015 en route to compiling the second-highest point total.

The Panthers will be looking to continue their winning ways today when they travel to Newport to take on Rogers at 4:15 p.m.

Girls’ volleyball grabs first win

After dropping a 3-1 decision at home to Shea last Thursday to start the season, the Johnston girls’ volleyball team was able to get in the win column on Tuesday with a 3-0 sweep over St. Raphael.

However, it was closer than the score appears.

The Saints gave the Panthers everything they could handle in each set but, ultimately, Johnston was able to secure 26-24, 25-21 and 27-25 set victories.

The result was encouraging for a young Panthers team, with its roster boasting no seniors, two juniors, eight sophomores and four freshmen.

Johnston will be back in action today when it hosts Providence Country Day (0-2) at 4:30 p.m.
