Johnston Senior Center offering computer classes, upcoming trips

Posted

The Johnston Senior Center is offering its membership – and area residents – an unusual opportunity to head back to school.

However, there’s only one class, and one subject that center officials say “is extremely important to each and every senior citizen in today’s world of the ever-expanding electronic media.”

Tony Zompa, the center’s executive director, this week announced that beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 9, the nationally accredited center will begin fall computer classes at no cost for either the class or accompanying workbook.

The Computer Class will be taught by Susan Lena of the Federal Hill House, which coordinates all such programs for RSVP, or Retired Senior Volunteer Programs, at places like the Johnston Senior Center.

“We’re looking to fill the morning and afternoon (computer) classes,” Zompa said. “And there are actually two different levels.”

The Basic I Computer Class is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m., and affords seniors the opportunity to learn basic computer operation, Internet searching and email.

Zompa also noted that the Basic II Computer Class, which will started on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 10:30 a.m., includes review of basic skills, using the paint program and Word Pad, saving to an external drive, advanced Internet searching and email. He said people who register for this class must have already taken Basic I or the equivalent.

“All a person has to do is come into the center and register for the computer classes,” Zompa said. “We will also have open lab that will start on Thursday, Sept. 11 and run from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and people can come in for support from our instructors on topics of interest.”

The Johnston Senior Center is located at 1291 Hartford Ave. in Johnston and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

TRIP OPENINGS

There are still some openings for people to go on the center’s scheduled trips, Zompa also announced.

One of the most popular trips is the Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 4-5 trek to the famed Saratoga Races, which includes a special cruise. The cost is $279 per person, double occupancy. There’s also the Aug. 21 Gloucester Lobster Cruise that includes transportation on a special motor coach. That cost is $88 per person.

Only one trip will be held in September, and on the ninth that will include the Captain Jack-Lobster Bake at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Ledyard, Conn., for $78 per person.

There will be a trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto in October, as well as to places like PPAC for “Cinderella,” the Newport Playhouse and the Salem Witches Museum in Massachusetts.

Anyone who’d like to reserve a seat or would like further information and a schedule for all trips should call Marie Venditti, events and trips coordinator, at 401-944-3343.
