ASSAULT

On November 21 at approximately 8:30 p.m., Patrolman Arthur Petteruti responded to the Pick N’ Pay at 94 George Waterman Road in reference to a simple assault where the suspect had fled the scene.

Upon arrival, the officer met with the juvenile victim who stated that she was assaulted by Gian Parrella, 18, of 59 Lexington Avenue, Apt. 2, North Providence. The victim was also with two friends who witnessed the incident. The officer requested that she and her father, who was called and indicated he wished to press charges, meet at police headquarters to complete a witness statement.

At headquarters, the victim told the officer that she was sitting in the passenger seat of her friend’s vehicle and was traveling southbound on George Waterman Road. She observed a vehicle traveling directly behind them, which crossed the double yellow line several times during attempts to pass them. She said that due to the other vehicle’s attempts to pass, they pulled into the Pick N’ Pay to purchase gasoline.

When they parked near the pump, the suspect also parked next to them. Parrella then exited his vehicle and approached the passenger side window of the victim’s car, which was open. According to the report, Parrella then spit in the victim’s face and said, “You’re so fat” along with other expletives. He then opened the victim’s door, pulled her by the hair and started to strike her in the face with closed fists. The victim then defended herself and struck back in an attempt to protect herself from injuries. After the assault, the suspect left the scene. The witnesses also corroborated the story told by the victim, and there were no surveillance cameras in the lot where the incident took place.

An attempt was made to contact Parrella, which was met with negative results. A background check on the suspect also proved negative.

An arrest warrant was later issued for Parrella, and on December 10 at around 2:45 p.m. Patrolman Galligan responded to the North Providence Police Department, where the suspect was being detained. He was searched, secured in a cruiser and transported to Johnston’s headquarters. He was processed and secured in a cell. At his arraignment later that day, Parrella was released on $1,000 personal recognizance with a re-arraignment date of January 9, 2017.

DISPERSAL

Patrolman Andrew Broccoli along with Patrolman Parascandolo responded to the Bank of America on Atwood Avenue on December 7 around 10:16 a.m. for a dispersal of a female party from the bank.

At the scene, officers met with the woman, later identified as Dawn Pommenville, 46, of 993 Manton Avenue, Apt. 305, Providence. She advised the officers that she was attempting to withdraw money from the bank, however was denied access to her account as she did not have any forms of identification on her.

Background checks of Pommenville revealed four outstanding district court warrants for her arrest. The warrants were for providing false information to 9-1-1, crank or obscene phone calls, and two stemming from obstructing a police officer.

Pommenville was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters, where she was processed without incident.

DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

While on patrol in the area of 1800 Atwood Avenue on December 7 around 1:20 p.m., Sergeant Stephen Altomari observed a vehicle utilize the center turn lane to overtake a vehicle traveling ahead of it in the southbound lane. Sgt. Altomari then witnessed the vehicle make a lefthand turn west onto Greenville Avenue through a red traffic signal.

A traffic stop was initiated after the vehicle turned onto Carpenter Drive, where Sergeant Altomari met with the driver, identified as Jennelle Cain, 38, of 41 Annandale Road, Apt. 2F, Newport. The officer noted that Cain had glossy and bloodshot eyes, slurred speech along with difficulty focusing and answering questions. After handing the sergeant her registration, she continued to search the car for the same document for another minute.

Cain was confused as to her current location, as well as where she was traveling from and to. Registry checks revealed that Cain’s Massachusetts license and her vehicle’s registration were suspended. She initially denied taking any medications or consuming any alcohol, but later stated she had taken two pills of her prescribed clonazepam.

Lt. Babbit then arrived on scene to assist, and Cain agreed to partake in a series of standardized sobriety tests. Based on her performance and Sergeant Altomari’s training and experience, it was determined that Cain was unfit to operate a motor vehicle and she was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence. Her vehicle was later towed.

She was placed in a cruiser, where the officer noted that an odor of alcohol began to fill the car. At headquarters, Cain refused to submit to a chemical breathalyzer test. She was issued citations for obedience to a traffic control device, operating a vehicle with a revoked registration and suspended license, refusal to submit to a chemical breath test, and driving under the influence first offense.
