Johnston High’s spirit shines during Homecoming festivities

Posted

This past weekend, Nov. 8, Johnston Senior High School held its 47th annual Homecoming.

On Friday, Nov. 7 was the very successful school pep rally. It was a great start to the weekend, and got all the students in that panther spirit.

Saturday was kicked off at 10 a.m. with the parade. We were very pleased to have the police horses, as well as the Honor Guard, Police Explorers, town officials, and a special thanks to all the class floats and participants. The class floats were proof of hours upon hours of work put together by each class.

Following the parade, the Lions Club held a breakfast for anyone interested in the school cafeteria. The turnout was a great success, as usual.

This year’s football game was extra special. It was also senior night for the football players, cheerleaders and majorettes. The seniors were acknowledged before the game began. At 2:30 p.m., the battle between the Johnston High School Panthers and the Mount Pleasant Kilties began.

At halftime, the members of this year’s 2014-15 Homecoming Royalty were announced. Congratulations to Aaron Perfetto and Taylor Russo for winning King and Queen.

Tied at halftime, the Panther’s didn’t lose hope. It was in the last few minutes where the Kilties unfortunately beat the Panthers, 35-21. The panthers held a good fight, and the many fans in the stands were constantly cheering them on.

Following the game on Saturday was the annual Homecoming dance. Beginning at 8 p.m. and ending at 11 p.m., the students gathered for the last of the Homecoming fun. A special thanks goes out to the faculty and staff members that chaperoned the dance. Concluding the dance, the Battle of the Classes awards were announced, along with the winner of the float competition.

Winning 11 out of 12 events, the seniors were the winners of Battle of the Classes. Juniors came in second, followed by the sophomores in third and the freshmen in fourth.

The float competition was a tight battle. Folding and fluffing thousands and thousands of flowers to assemble such masterpieces took months for the students and their advisors. Coming out on top were the seniors, followed by the sophomores in second, the freshmen in third and the juniors in fourth.

This year’s homecoming was such a great success, and it couldn’t have been done without the help of the students, faculty, Student Council and especially Student Council advisor, Gregory Russo.
