Johnston High students prepare for SATs, PSATs

Posted

The SATs and PSATs are coming fast!

The PSAT is being administered Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Johnston Senior High School. The test begins at 7:30 a.m. and takes approximately four hours. The deadline to sign up for this test is Oct. 14, and the fee to take it is $20. This practice test is given as an opportunity to sophomore and junior students that wish to improve their chances of scoring high on the SAT test or for future college work.

In the PSAT, students are assessed on their critical reading, mathematics and writing skills. The student will also be able to review the questions they answered in the PSAT after they get scored and are available. The PSAT scores will be available by December following the October test date. After the scores are available and reviewed by the student, they are encouraged by their counselors to sign up for the spring SAT in May or June of the next year.

The SAT is normally taken by students as juniors in the spring and seniors in the fall. Most students will take the test twice and improve their score the second time. SATs are offered in October, November, December, January, February, March, May and June. The upcoming test date is Oct. 11, followed by Nov. 8 and Dec. 6. There are more dates for the SAT for next year.

Generally, for the SAT, similar to the PSAT (if taken), students are tested on the same criteria. Counselors encourage students to take part in this standardized test, especially those who plan to apply to a college following high school. However, not all colleges accept or require SAT scores.

Good luck to all the students taking the PSAT or SAT this year!
