Johnston 9U Panthers edge Packers

The 9U Johnston football team won a hard-fought battle, 7-6, against the Packers this week. The defense, for the second week in a row, kept its opponent scoreless well into the fourth quarter.

In the second quarter, the Packers had a second-and-goal on the 2-yard line, but the rock solid defensive play of Ethan Placella, Benji Soe, Domenic Esposito, Jimmy Barnett, Joseph Matteo, Derek Zant, TJ Goron, Steven Marcantonio, Alex Fedorchuck, Branden Testa and Jayden Testa kept them out of the end zone.

With four minutes left, the Panthers’ defense again faced the Packers on the goal line. The staunch defense held them for three downs, but on fourth down the Packers broke the plane for a touchdown.

The defense did not allow the extra point.

The Panthers’ offense, led by quarterback Matt Clements, went to work with less than three minutes to play. The offensive line of Gavin King, Ryan Audino, JJ Lachapelle, James Pastore, Robert D’Alessio and Joseph Cuoco held off the Packers’ defense. Clements handed off to TJ Thaddeus, who put the Panthers in good scoring position. A double reverse to Christopher Geraghty, who fought his way to the outside for a 25-yard run, resulted in a Panthers’ touchdown. Mikey Cavros scored the extra point to clinch the win.
