The Johnston 11-year-old all-star team played its way to a 3-0 record in the District 1 Little League tournament last week. In its 9-0 win over North Providence East, Derek Salvatore pitched five innings while giving up just one hit and striking out four. Cam Salois came in to close out the win. The offense was led by Jonah Pecchia, Dylan Martins, Salvatore and Salois, who all had multi-hit games.

In a 14-5 win over Cranston East, Salois pitched four innings while striking out five batters. Joey Vento came on in relief to pitch two innings and record four strikeouts. Martins, Salvatore and Mike Laflamme all had three hits, with Laflamme hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning.

The winners’ bracket final was then played at rival Cranston Western Little League. Johnston held a tight, 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when the offense exploded with six runs, highlighted by Laflamme’s bases-clearing double and a solo home run by Ryan Nichols. Salvatore pitched into the sixth inning, recording eight strikeouts as Vento came on to get the last out.

Contributing to Johnston’s strong all-around play were Hudson Carvalho, Andrew Picard, Jase Deanseris, Aidan McGarry and Antonio Defalco.

Johnston will play for the District Championship tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Kennedy Field.
