Job Lot teams up with URI SNAP-ED to offer cooking demonstration, recipe tasting

During this back-to-school season, making a nutritious breakfast or snack often takes a backseat to bus schedules, carpooling, homework supervision, sports practices, and other activities. Ocean State Job Lot has teamed up with the University of Rhode Islands SNAP-Ed nutrition education program to help time-strapped parents solve that problem.

On Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Ocean State Job Lot will host a free cooking demonstration and recipe tasting at its store located at 1441 Elmwood Ave. in Cranston. As part of Job Lots Choose Well initiative, URI SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator Heidi Hetzler, MS, RD, LDN will prepare easy-to-make and nutritionally balanced food items for children and adults alike that are perfect to eat for breakfast, after school or on weekends. The recipes feature inexpensive ingredients that are conveniently found in a grocer’s aisle.

At the demonstration, there will also be prize drawings to win backpacks filled with healthy snacks and school supplies. The public is invited to attend and there is no charge.

Ocean State Job Lot, a leading regional closeout retailer with 122 stores throughout New England, New York, and New Jersey, is partnering with University of Rhode Island and the federal SNAP-Ed nutrition education program to develop a variety of healthy, delicious and low-cost recipes as part of its “Fancy, Frugal & Fit” ongoing campaign.

“Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast are more alert and energetic, have better concentration and start their day in a better mood,” Hetzler said. “Breakfast eaters also have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight. The recipes I will be demonstrating at Job Lot are simple and inexpensive to make and taste great, so I invite children of all ages to attend and learn at this cooking demonstration.”

“Fancy, Frugal & Fit pairs well with Ocean State Job Lots Choose Well program. Following a nutritionally balanced diet is a big part of staying healthy,” said David Sarlitto, executive director at Ocean State Job Lot.
