JMCE’s annual golf tournament raises $12K

It’s official.

The recent eighth annual Johnston Memorial Cancer Events (JMCE) Golf Tournament – played in memory of the late Laura DeAngelis, Anna Mazzulla and Salvatore Gelsomino – raised a record-setting $12,000.

“We want to thank everyone who made this happen,” said Linda LaFazia, who coordinates the JMCE events with her husband Vin. “What an out pouring of love and caring from dozens of generous people.”

Once all of the JMCE’s 2015 events are complete, officials will make their annual trip to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence to donate the year’s proceeds. To date, the organization has given $95,000 to benefit the hospital’s Oncology and Hematology Units.

“We raise the money in memory of our friends,” Vin LaFazia said. “We also do this in hopes it will help those children who have been stricken with cancer.”

The foursome of John Mailloux, Fran Chatelle, Tony Turbitt and Ken DiFonzo took top honors in this year’s tournament, which attracted a record field of 160 golfers to Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam, Conn.

Friends Linda LaFazia, Judi Graham, Karen Wells and Pat Quaranta again took home top honors for the ladies.

The co-ed division champs included Randy and Kim Kosh and Gianna and Richard Delponte.

Tournament committee members, who this week again issued a “thank you” to each and every sponsor, golfer and volunteer, are Dennis and Pat Quaranta, the DeAngelis family, Judi and David Graham, the LaFazia family, the Gelsomino family, Mike Mazzulla, Robin Christensen, John Furia, John Graham, Joe and Karen Wells, Steve Placella and Fran and Jean Chatelle.

Special thanks went to World Trophies, Eramaian Signs, the Johnston Recreation Department, Stop & Shop and Affiliated Insurance Managers.

The major sponsors were Gentry Moving, Graham Builders Inc., Brewed Awakenings, Connecticut National Golf Club, Louis Press, CVS Pharmacy, DeGregorio Corporation, Calise & Sons Bakery and the Mazzulla Scholarship.
