JCCA wrapping up summer entertainment series with weekend outdoor movie

The Johnston Community Center Association, a non-profit that prides itself on giving back to the town in a number ways, will close the curtain on its 2016 entertainment schedule with Saturday night’s final installment of the Movies in the Park series.

“It’s been a great summer,” said Glenn Carroll, the JCCA’s president. “We’ve had three great Concerts in the Park, and our Movies in the Park have been well received.”

That may have been an understatement, as both the music and movie nights were overwhelming successes that included a variety of music for all ages and top-of-the-line Walt Disney productions that hundreds of Johnstonians are hoping will be back in 2017.

On Saturday, the fourth and final Movies in the Park event will be held inside Johnston War Memorial Park, with “The Lion King” as the night’s feature. There will be free popcorn and water available for attendees.

“All our events are presented free of charge,” said Mark Gilmore, JCCA’s vice president.

“All people have to do is show up,” Carroll said. “We encourage people to bring their blankets, lawn chairs, whatever, and we’ll provide the entertainment.”

The JCCA completed its concert schedule Sunday night when Joshua David took the War Memorial Park stage and performed for roughly 90 minutes.

“Unfortunately, the crowd was down from what it had been in the first two concerts,” Gilmore said. “But you have to take into consideration the St. Rocco’s Feast and Festival was in its final night.”

Still, people who did take in Sunday night’s concert enjoyed David’s singing and guitar playing.

When asked how the JCCA finds its entertainers, Gilmore said: “We get recommendations. In Joshua David’s case, we found out about him from Valerie Valentine, and she was right, he was indeed a good selection.”

So was the recent Jesse Liam Band, which included four talented troupers who electrified an appreciative audience for some 90 minutes.

“It is our intentions to bring the best possible entertainers to our Summer Concerts in the Park Series,” Gilmore said. “We are indeed happy with the groups we’ve had this summer and hope we can offer more of the same next summer.”
