It's matresses, music at JHS on March 4

The award-winning Johnston High Music Department is about to hold the most unique fundraiser in the school’s history.

Next Saturday – March 4 – the Panthers’ Edward L. DiSimone Gymnasium will be transformed into a 20-plus-bed showroom filled with all size and style mattresses during the event that’s designed to raise money for the department’s April trip to the Music in the Parks Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia.

“Everyone connected with our Music Department is excited about this fundraiser,” Ron Lamoureux, who directs the JHS program, said. “It’s certainly unique around here and will offer up to 50 percent off retail prices.”

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature name brands like Simmons Beautyrest and Restonic mattresses, and is coming to Johnston courtesy of Custom Fundraising Concepts (CFS) that has helped countless school and youth groups raise revenue for projects since 2005.

Joe Matejka, who is the owner of “Mattress Fundraiser,” says: “The key to making the event so successful is the kids.”

“The concept is unusual but one that absolutely works,” said Matejka. “One in 10 people buy a new mattress every single year. We offer the community a quality product they need, at a great price and the best part is that every sale benefits the school.”

Matejka further explained that “our one-day sale has helped various groups raise thousands of dollars; that is why we are in this business … to help the kids.”

Jason Glander, a representative for the CFS Providence branch, this week announced that area residents will soon be seeing area yard signs advertising the March 4 “Mattress Fundraiser” and the promotions company will afford some proud Panthers with an opportunity to wear “mattress suits” while promoting the unique sale to passersby.

Lamoureux, who along with Oliver Reid and Matt Gingras have developed the JHS Music Department into one of the best, well-rounded programs in the state, said: “Our kids have made and held all kinds of signs for our events, but never before have they dressed like a mattress.”

The concept is designed to help non-profit groups raise thousands of dollars in a one-day sale and provide the community with a product they need for great value. CFS has over 60 locations nationwide and has given back more than $18 million dollars.

“The company’s mission is to grow to over 100 locations,” Glander said from his Providence office. “Also, CFS wants to give back over $10-million each year.”

“The Mattress Fundraiser” hopes to raise serious funds that will afford the Panthers’ band, choir and select chorus an opportunity to perform on a large scale and compete for national honors against schools from all across the country.
