Johnston High School’s 2016 Senior Honor Awards Night will be long remembered.

It was a night when the Ronald Lamoureux-led Johnston High band shined. It was a night that featured a unique presentation of the colors, courtesy of Johnston’s firefighters. It was a night when the award-wining Johnston High chorus, under the direction of Oliver Reid, delivered a powerful rendition of the national anthem.

It was a night when Gillian Melikian, the senior class president, offered an inspiring greeting to her peers and their proud parents. It was a night coordinated by the school’s guidance department – chair Deborah Licciardi, counselors Mary Vingi, Ryan Barrette, Daniele Mallari, and Lauren Fagundes, and clerks Pamela DelPonte and Donna Vicario – who were recognized for putting on such a impressive program.

“Our Senior Night gives us a chance to showcase the talents and accomplishments of our graduating seniors,” Principal Zachary S. Farrell said. “We are certainly proud of each and every one of them and wish them continued success in the years to come.”

A total of 37 seniors received prestigious National Honor Society Awards from Farrell and math department chair Jean Picano, while Superintendent Dr. Bernard DiLullo and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Arthur-Paul Petrosinelli presented 59 members of the class of 2016 with Rhode Island Honor Society Awards.

“Senior Honors Night is one of the highlights of the end of a student’s high school career,” DiLullo said. “The night showcases the hard work and dedication of each student honored here tonight. It’s a testament to the success these students have experienced and their hard work to achieve their goals.”

Like Farrell and Mayor Joseph Polisena said during their remarks, DiLullo also noted: “I’m very proud of our honored students and thank their teachers and parents for their ongoing support in helping these students achieve their best. I’m looking forward to their future success and wish them the best as they face the challenges and opportunities that await them.”

Students received various academic and athletic awards, as well as scholarships that in some cases were presented by donors, members of their families, or awarding organizations.

Andrew Sano was awarded the Senior Academic Decathlon Team Award and was one of five Rhode Island Scholars. Others were Ibrahim Abaherah, Rachel Graziano, Jenna Bouchard, and Joely Centracchio.

American Chemical Society Awards went to Abaherah, Emma Almont, Katarina Athaide, Taylor Champignon, Centracchio, Twyla Disco, Logan Fanner-Ferreira, Edward Gallucci II, Austin Gossetti, Graziano, Bella Izzo, Victoria Johnston, Jordan McHale, Brianna Messa, Lauren Messier, Steven Parrillo, Sano, and Nicholas Spinella.

Moody’s Math Challenge honors went to Abaherah, Bouchard and Graziano, while winners of the Class of 2016 Awards were Abaherah, salutatorian, and Centracchio, valedictorian; Eric Perkins, Student Council president; and Melikian, senior class president. The Principal’s Leadership Award went to Perkins.
