(Funny sci-fi parody)

If you want a few good laughs and some clever sci-fi parody, “Guardians of the Galaxy” should please you.

Chris Pratt stars as Peter Quill, the self-proclaimed Star-Lord, a galactic petty thief who winds up in prison with four of the wildest characters you will ever see in one movie. They join together to escape and take on bad guy Ronan, who wants to conquer the galaxy, although they are constantly squabbling amongst themselves.

Zoe Saldana plays Gamora, a tough, hard fighting relative of the bad guy who seeks revenge, and forms a love/hate relationship with Quill. Dave Bautista is Drax, the unemotional strong man who slowly breaks down and joins in the battles. Vin Diesel is the voice of Groot, a tree-like creature (that’s right, a tree) who changes shapes and answers every question with “I am Groot.” It’s a running gag that actually grows on you.

The most interesting character is Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a sarcastic raccoon with a long list of one-liners that make you chuckle every time he opens his mouth.

Put them all together and you have the oddest quintet ever to take on the bad guys in a two-hour marathon of mayhem with enough action to satisfy any sci-fi fan.

The movie actually has a moral tone to it, as the Guardians all seek self-respect and learn to respect the others’ differences.

As the movie opens, Quill is mourning his mother’s death when he and his Sony Walkman (Remember those?) are swept up by a spaceship and spends his life searching for an orb that, if in the wrong hands, could destroy the galaxy.

After two hours, we get the showdown between the evil Ronan and the Guardians. We are then blatantly told to expect a sequel. Let’s hope it is at least as good as this one.

Rated PG-13 with some minor violence and profanity.
