Friends of Mohr Library holding weekend used book sale

The Friends of Mohr Library, a non-profit group that helps support Johnston’s only public library in a number of ways, will hold another of its popular used book sales this weekend.

For a total of 15 hours on Friday, Sept. 23, and Saturday, Sept. 24, the Friends will offer what president Helen Antonizio called “fantastic deals on over 3,000 used books” that are stocked in the lower level meeting room.

“We’re expecting many people to join their neighbors and friends and browse through our great selection of hardcover and paperback books,” Antonizio said. “We’re even going to have a demonstration of making tiny books on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.”

The more books that are sold, the more money the Friends can provide to support programs like “Coloring for Grownups,” an ongoing offering held at 6 p.m. on Monday nights.

Just this past week, the Friends hosted Ray Rickman, who spoke about the history of the slave trade in Rhode Island.

Antonizio also announced that the Friends will host and sponsor Lloyd Kaplan, professor emeritus and former head of the Community College of Rhode Island music department, on Tuesday, Oct. 20. He will speak about the contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to the development of jazz music.

“We’re excited about Lloyd coming to Mohr Library,” Antonizio said. “He’s also leader of the talented jazz band The Aristocrats that plays all over the state.”

The Friends of Mohr Library, Antonizio noted, is a member of both the Rhode Island Coalition of Library Advocates and United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. The group always welcomed new members.

Those who attend the used book sale on Friday and Saturday will find a large variety of fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, CDs, and books on tape. There’s something for every age, and most prices range from 50 cents per book to $2. Some books may be a bit more expensive, but Antonizio said “they’ll still be at bargain prices.”

Friday’s sale will begin at 9 a.m. and run through 5 p.m. Saturday’s hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library is located at One Memorial Drive, opposite Johnston High School and next to Johnston Municipal Court.
