Figures from past come alive at Winsor Hill History Fair

There were a number of historic happenings – and heroes – inside Winsor Hill Elementary School last Friday.

“George Washington and Abraham Lincoln showed up today,” said Gina Schino, who serves as president of the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). “Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana have also made an appearance.”

Scores of adults and children also got to see “The Boys of Summer,” like the legendary Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth. And as Dina Needham, a special education teacher who heads Winsor Hill’s food pantry, noted: “Don’t forget Roger Williams and Thomas Jefferson are here, too.”

Winsor Hill Principal Michelle Zarcaro and others would attest that last Friday was a special, educational day for each and every student at the Johnston elementary school as fifth-graders showcased their talents.

“This is our History Fair/Wax Museum,” Needham said. “It involves all our fifth graders who obviously had lots of fun and are showcasing their talents in many different forms today.”

Winsor Hill students chose a famous person in history they wanted to study, and created backboards, wrote an essay, prepared a speech, and dressed as their figure for the event.

“This integrated curriculum project brought about the best in our students,” Needham said. “We had many to visit them throughout the day to see these famous people come to life. The students’ parents and families enjoyed this project in the afternoon and our entire student body viewed it in the morning.”

In addition to Needham, other Winsor Hill fifth-grade teachers who created the project were Stacy Landi, Marguerite Aiello, Renee Toppi, and Sue DeConte.
