Early Childhood Center hosts Reading Week programs

The youngsters who attend the Johnston Early Childhood Center celebrated National Reading Week with a variety of interesting programs.

“We had five different theme days all geared toward National Reading Week,” said Amy Andrews, president of the Early Childhood Center’s Parent Teacher Organization, after last Friday’s final program. “Each of the days was a success.”

The week began on Monday with “Shuffle Stories Day,” during which kindergarten teachers shuffled classes and read their favorite story to a different class.

Tuesday was “Read Me Day,” and the kids could wear something with words of four letters as long as they were school appropriate. Wednesday was “Book with a Snack Day,” which involved listening to a story and enjoying a special snack provided by the school.

Michael Johnson, a host for WPRI-TV Channel 12’s “Rhode Show,” headlined Thursday’s “Guest Reader Day.”

But Friday was perhaps the most fun for the children and teachers, as it was “Get Cozy and Read Day,” during which youngsters could wear their pajamas and bring in their favorite book.

The entire week was coordinated by Felicia Chionchio, the center’s literacy coach.
