Early Childhood Center celebrates Reading Week

It seems as though every time Johnston’s Early Childhood Center holds an educational event, the bar gets higher and higher.

Take last week’s Reading Week, which Principal Julie-anne Zarrella said was a “special success due to the wonderful work of Felicia Chionchio, who serves as literacy coach at the town’s first-ever all-day kindergarten.”

The event began Monday with “Shuffle Service Day,” as kindergarten teachers shuffled classes and read their favorite book to a different class.

“Read Me Day” was held Tuesday, and students were encouraged to wear something with words or letters, while last Wednesday was “Get Cozy and Read Day,” during which students could wear pajamas and bring their favorite book.

Perhaps the two most exciting days were Thursday and Friday, when the kindergarten community held a “Vocabulary Hat Parade” that featured all the children creating special headwear.

“Our students had to create a hat that represented their selected word which debuted during the hat parade,” Zarrella said. “It was similar to our Scarecrow Parade held last fall, and the students were very creative decorating their hats.”

The parade took a special route through the ECC and into the Johnston Public Schools administration offices before heading back to the kindergarten.

Friday was “Guest Author Day,” and Chinchow enlisted the services of Eric Sturtevant, who demonstrated to the students how he became an author and how he creates his books.

“Eric did a great, great job with all our students,” Chionchio said. “The children were very excited to meet him and watch how he sketches. He also did a drawing lesson and also read his popular book, ‘Ducky Ducky Likes to Moo.’ And they really loved the audience participation part, too.”

There were also other reading activities throughout the week, with “guest” teachers reading to the students.

“It was a wonderful week, and our PTO provided books to all our students to take home for their vacation week,” Zarrella said.
