Double-talk

Posted

To the Editor:

With National Grid, and Narragansett Electric/New England Electric before it, the bafflegab never ceases. As a former PUC chairman, I can recall this kind of double-talk every time we had a rate case.

My one comment on the answers you received to your questions is that gas, which is supplied to consumers, competes with other products, especially heating oil. Magically, prices drop. The supplying of electricity is a monopoly and not surprisingly that is where (at the same time) the price increases show up. As you say in your article, “go figure.”

    Dear William,

Rhode Island is one of the last states in the USA that still has not fully deregulated their energy. In neighboring Connecticut there are many choices for electricity with a large savings to the consumer. Here, the choices are few and the savings are "mild."

You're right. There is a monopoly here in Rhode Island. I understand that National Grid/ Narragansett Electric donated A LOT of money to Lincoln Chaffee's gubernatorial campaign, but I'm sure that is just a coincidence.

Call me at 401-338-9900 if you wish to continue this conversation.

    Be well.
