Democratic Town Committee kicks off election season

“We need your help,” Mayor Joseph Polisena told those gathered at 1500 Atwood Ave. Saturday morning. “We will take no race for granted.”

If that sounds like an election pitch, it was.

Around 9 a.m. Saturday, Richard J. DelFino Jr., chairman of the Johnston Democratic Town Committee, welcomed current local officeholders, various town and state leaders, and supporters to the grand opening of the party’s headquarters.

“We have a good team in place right now, we want to keep it that way and therefore we need to work to ensure our people remain in place,” Polisena said.

Town Council members Robert V. Russo, Richard J. DelFino III, David Santilli, and Anthony Verardo were among those on hand. It is expected all four will seek new terms in November. Robert Civetti has announced his candidacy for the District 5 seat currently held by Stephanie Manzi.

On the School Committee side, members Robert LaFazia and Joseph Rotella are also expected to seek re-election, with the other three seats not expiring this year. Polisena is in the midst of a four-year term.

The declaration period for candidates arrives June 27-29.

Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea also attended the event and provided remarks.

“It’s fantastic to be here and help kick off the election season,” she said. “You have a great team leading a great town. Please remember it’s all about community building in these elections. Congratulations, and let’s all work hard during this election to return out team to office.”
