Democratic Town Committee hosts Family Unity Breakfast

“Two down, one to go,” Richard J. DelFino Jr., who chairs the Johnston Democratic Town Committee, said around 11 o’clock Sunday morning. “Now we’ll begin planning for another big event in the fall.”

While DelFino termed Sunday’s Family Unity Breakfast – which attracted upwards of 300 people to the Gibson Council Knights of Columbus Hall on Douglas Avenue in North Providence – a huge success, he wasn’t speaking of the November election.

Although a fixed date has not been determined, the committee will host a 5K (3.1-mile) Road Race as its third pre-election fundraiser in October.

“We’re hoping to make the road race special in a number of ways,” DelFino said. “It would be super to have the same number of runners as we had here today for the breakfast.”

Half of Rhode Island’s Washington delegation – U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Rep. David Cicilline – came to Sunday’s fundraising breakfast, and the state’s top four elected officials were also on hand.

Gov. Gina Raimondo, Lt. Gov. Dan McKee, Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea, and Treasurer Seth Magaziner all delivered brief greetings to their fellow Democrats.

Raimondo complimented Mayor Joseph Polisena for his work in helping to keep Citizens Bank in Rhode Island with a new campus planned in Johnston.

“The annual family breakfast gives representatives of our community, working families, the elderly, and so on the opportunity to come together and enjoy breakfast with their elected officials as the local, state, and federal levels,” DelFino said. “And people also have a chance to discuss with them their issues and concerns.”

DelFino also said the first-ever Johnston Democratic Town Committee cookbooks were “a huge hit today.”

“I personally want to thank all our advertisers,” he added. “Also, a huge thank you for each and every person that volunteered here today and helped make this breakfast a Democratic success.”
