The Johnston girls’ volleyball team received several awards from the Rhode Island Volleyball Coaches’ Association this week.

Highlighting the individual awards for the Panthers was Dana Desmarais, who was named the Co-Player of the Year in Division III along with Julietshka Cabrera of Juanita Sanchez.

Desmarais also received First-Team All-Division honors for Division III-North.

Francesca Gaudiana and Angela Gallucci were also named as First-Team selections.

Kristina DiMascio was named to the Second-Team, while Alexa Tavares was a Third-Team selection.

Additionally, Gaudiana received the Most Valuable Player award for the playoffs. Desmarais and Gallucci were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Head coach Greta Lalli was named the Coach of the Year in Division III.

Johnston won the D-III state championship in November, out-lasting Portsmouth 3-2 in the title match, and was named the Burger King “Team of the Week” by the RIIL after earning the title. Overall, the team lost just four of the 61 games it played, and it went undefeated, which was the first time it had done that in program history.

The championship was Johnston’s second-ever and first in a decade.
