Cruizin’ for a Cause aims to raise record sum for Gloria Gemma Foundation

Rain may have washed out last week’s Cruizin’ for a Cause car show, but the Johnston Street Machines are not deterred in their efforts to top last year’s fundraising total for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

“Last year we had four successive successes and raised $1,800 for the foundation,” said Gary Maddocks, former deputy chief of the Johnston Police Department and president of the non-profit Street Machines. “Now, we’ve got to top that amount in three events.”

Weather permitting, the group will try its luck again from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight in the Denny’s Restaurant parking lot off Hartford Avenue (Route 6). The money raised through July’s weekly Cruizin’ events will go to the Gloria Gemma Foundation.

Owners of classic vehicles are invited to show off their prized possessions for a $5 entry fee. In return, Denny’s provides each with a 20-percent discount. There is no charge for spectators. The events also feature the music of “DJ Car-Guy” Richard George and a 50/50 raffle.
