Community rallies to support family in need at Cardsmart bake sale

Posted

“This was the best bake sale to date,” Lori Boffi said inside her Cardsmart store at 1507 Atwood Ave. in Johnston sometime around 6 o’clock Saturday. “We sold out.”

Boffi, who has become well known for her community commitment and helping people in need during the past five years, added that the event raised more than $591.

The event was held to help Nikki Batsford, a Johnston woman who has had numerous surgeries for Chiari malformation and hydrocephalus, a life-threatening illness that has drained her mother Jan’s resources left the family with crippling medical expenses.

Boffi’s “Family of Friends” pulled out all the stops Saturday to help Batsford.

Boffi, who first met Batsford and her family in the former Johnston/North Providence Relay For Life, went on: “I need to thank my family for their love, help and support.”

She also thanked that “Family of Friends,” which includes customers who “came in here Saturday to support Nikki and the bake sale in some special way.”

Those people purchased baked goods or filled Nikki’s donation can and, as Boffi emphasized: “A handful of my customers came in and handed me cash or wrote out checks and didn’t even buy any of the baked goods. They all just waned to help Nikki.”

Boffi added: “I need to thank everyone who came in to support this fundraiser. I personally am very much appreciative of their support, their kindness, and without them my business and fundraising would not be as successful as it is today.”

But Boffi’s bunch wasn’t alone in showing their super support for Nikki Batsford on Saturday.

Sandy Cerel, Nikki’s aunt and her mother Jan’s sister, helped Boffi and others set up the bake sale and handed each person that came to the bake sale a special program that featured a color photo of Nikki.

Eleanor Pannone, Nikki’s grandmother, was overwhelmed by the day’s ongoing support, which included people from the Relay’s Team Raging Through the Ages stopping by to make donations and drop off baked goods they made special for Saturday’s sale.

Boffi, her mother Ann Storti – who turned super saleswomen Saturday – and her sister Deb Sohegan baked a host of goodies in hopes of making the bake sale special.

There were chocolate walnut biscotti, cupcakes, three different types of brownies, a variety of cakes and cookies, cranberry peach cobbler, pepper and egg biscuits, almond slices, chocolate popcorn and other caloric creations people made with love to help Nikki.

While Boffi’s Bake Sale won’t wipe out the Batsford’s bills, it will help, and Nikki and Jan are very, very appreciative of the ongoing support their receiving. Anyone who would like to make a donation may do so by visiting www.gofundme.com/95r81k.
