Chamber begins push for scholarship program

Along with the North Central Chamber of Commerce’s new theme of “All Hands on Deck in 2015” is the business and professional organization’s revamped Scholarship Program.

The Chamber, Executive Director Deborah A. Ramos and Scholarship Committee Chairperson Ann-Mary Currier are excited about the ongoing possibility of increasing the number of grants the non-profit presents each year to college-bound high school seniors who attend class within the organization’s footprint.

Last year, in fact, the committee presented two scholarships – one for $1,500 and another for $500 – at its annual Awards Dinner in the spring.

Ramos announced last Thursday that the group is already actively raising funds for this year’s scholarships.

“Our committee chair, Ann-Mary Currier, works hard so that the Chamber can continue this scholarship program,” Ramos said. “Naturally, we’d like to do more, but in recent years funds haven’t been as great as they were a few years ago.”

The Chamber kicked off its 2015 scholarship program with a new twist, raffling off a $100 Money Tree. Ramos announced that Linda Amaral of the North Providence branch of Pawtucket Credit Union was the big winner.

Ramos and Currier say they encourage each and every Chamber member and their friends and family to make a donation to the scholarship program.

“We’ll be having other scholarship fundraisers,” Ramos noted, “but if anyone would like to make a donation, we’d certainly welcome any and all amounts of money.”
