Breakfast with royalty: Princess from ‘Frozen‘ to visit Homefries on Dec. 30

Posted

The usually joyfully noisy restaurant Homefries went quiet. There was royalty present.

Queen Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen” had just walked in. She was there to surprise to three-year old cousins Carissa and Aubrey and have breakfast with them on Dec. 12.

The two little girls wore matching Elsa dresses along with fake hair braids that can be purchased to match Elsa’s style. They looked on with wide eyes as she walked in to greet them, and wore a look on their faces that suggested they could not believe what was happening.

Elsa greeted the children and gave them “Frozen” themed gifts, then sat down to spend time gossiping about her kingdom of Arendelle over an omelet – and, of course, home fries – for about an hour.

While the experience may have felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Carissa and Aubrey, it is not uncommon. What made it different from other princess parties, however, was the one-on-one nature of the event.

Johnston resident Ashley Coutu, along with her mother Wendy, have been providing families, charities, and establishments with entertainment since March of this year. It all began with a favor – Wendy’s friend was in need of an Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” for her daughter’s birthday party. Wendy offered up her daughter for the role. Then, “Frozen” came out and became a phenomenon. And Ashley just happens to be the spitting image of the lead character.

“I saw how she was with the children and how theatrical she was,” Wendy said of her daughter, a studio art major at Providence College.

The mother-daughter team began booking children’s birthday parties, along with doing some volunteer work. Recently, they spent some time volunteering at the Sew into Fashion Show, which benefited the ALS Association.

Wendy and Ashley are dedicated to bringing kids any amount of happiness they can.

“It’s been such a joy to see my daughter bring joy to all these young boys and girls it’s so much fun,” Wendy said.

When they do a party or an event, Elsa, Ariel or Aurora from “Sleeping Beauty” partakes in the festivities by reading a book to the kids, usually the novelization of the movie she’s representing. Also she sings and dances with the kids, helps cut the cake and dubs the birthday girl or boy the prince or princess of the day. Recently, she’s been hearing what kids want for Christmas.

Elsa will be doing more volunteer work to give back to her resident community of Johnston. On Dec. 30, she’ll be at Homefries again from 10 a.m. to noon to take photos and chat with local kids.
