Big Brothers Big Sisters advises of alternatives after popular drop-off bins move

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State (BBBSOS) is advising the public of alternatives after three of its most popular drop-off bins were removed for a construction project.

The bins outside the CVS location at 1919 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence have been displaced as a result of an expansion project at the site to make way for a new bank branch.

“They’ve been there probably for five or six years, and are really our most productive bin location,” said Lori Viner, donations center manager for BBBSOS.

Viner said the property’s ownership was “really very kind in allowing us to make other arrangements.” It is hoped the bins can be returned to the location once the project is complete.

In the meantime, bins remain located directly across the street in the Work Out World parking lot – which Viner described as being “as convenient, but maybe less conspicuous.”

Donations of gently used clothing and household items can also be taken to the BBBSOS donation center at 59 Putnam Pike in Johnston. That facility is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

George Evans Marley, marketing/community outreach specialist for BBBSOS, said the donations play a key role in supporting the organization’s operations and mentoring programs for children. Currently, he said, the non-profit has approximately 200 youngsters on its mentor waiting list – roughly double the typical amount.

“We are currently in a mentor deficit,” he said. “Now more than ever, there’s a need for people to step up and become mentors.”

Those seeking to mentor a child, or businesses willing to host a donation bin, can contact BBBSOS at 401-921-2434 or visit www.bbbsos.org.
