It was a cold, windy morning.
The more I thought about the
politics, the battle lines, the
unnatural disasters...the tighter I gathered
the lapels of my jacket…I was on
a mission though. I had to pick up
250 bags of nut-free candy for all
of the students at my school. I was about
to pay the cashier when a little Christmas
miracle intervened.
The gentleman ahead of me in line exclaimed
"Wow! What's all that candy for?"
I responded, "Oh, it's a long story.
You really don't want to know?"
The tall man in the hooded sweatshirt
just smiled and said, "Oh, I think I do."
"Ok, You see, each year on December 6
(St. Nicholas's Feast Day) students remove
their shoes and place them in the corridor
outside their classrooms. St. Nick makes a
secret appearance and when class is over, the
kids rush to the corridor to find their goulashes
brimming with candy. It's a tradition."
As I was reaching into my wallet to pay the bill,
the gentleman smiled and with a nod and a twinkle slipped in
his credit card ... paying for the entire purchase. Speechless,
by this unsolicited, selfless act of kindness to complete strangers,
I was about to thank him when with a mischievous
wink, he whispered, "Merry Christmas and spread
the Good News..." Then in a flash he turned with a jerk, melting
into the hectic mob of shoppers.
Scurrying to bag my bundles, I tried to find him in the parking
lot ... strangely the wind had ceased ... and the world had
just got a whole lot warmer.
Merry Christmas
