60s and Sexy:

It's time to redefine with design

Posted

Today, women are redefining life in their 60s. This is the time to know your worth – no more wallflower moments for you. Having the grace and wisdom that only a 60-something woman can possess, this is a decade to show off your style and feel comfortable with self-expression.

At this age, our outlook is refreshing about life and other things. All the little things that use to bother us seem just like that – little.

The smaller and safer the print, the more “granny” it can become. If you love florals and bright colors, go for it. Big, bright blooms splashed across a well-fitting dress, top or capris are not only flattering but eye-catching. Skip the safe pastels and go for magenta, turquoise, purple.

When choosing new clothes, think breathable fabrics. They are comfortable and sophisticated. Make sure you pair them with a more structured item like a blazer or jacket to balance a more generous fit. A cute pair of flowy palazzo pants looks adorable with a camisole and structured jean jacket. Add a fun sandal with a small heel and you are ready for a casual wedding or outdoor lunch.

Dressing in your 60s is all about the detail. This can be a stand-up ruffled collar – which, by the way, is great if you don’t love your neck – contrast piping on a jacket or a fabulous piece of statement jewelry. Even a cute pair of loafers with a metallic embellishment can make an outfit.

This doesn’t mean you have to discard all your existing clothes. Find a nice blend of timeless and trendy. Adding a fabulous scarf, belt or even a fun hat can update lots of things you already own.

Don’t be afraid to mix textures and metals. Layering a soft knit top, with a raw silk scarf and some fun stack bangles can look classy but fun. If you have some basic pieces in solid colors adding color in the form of jewelry, shoes and bags can totally change an outfit. You don’t have to break the bank to do this.

Accessories likes scarves, bags and jewelry are your new secret weapon. You can pick up inexpensive items at Job Lot, Target, T.J. Maxx and a host of other little stores. When buying trendy/seasonal things, don’t think designer or real leather. Think pleather, fun enamel coated bracelets, inexpensive dangly earrings. They can offer an instant update to any outfit and can help you step out of the box of your usual safe colors.

As you are dialing in your wardrobe, discard items that no longer work for your style and body type. For most of us, this would include hemlines above the knee, unless you still have great legs. A pencil skirt can be flattering with a hem at the knee or upper calf. Shimmer, shine and sequins can be age advancing. Leave these textures to your accessories. Details like fringe, studs and embroidery should be kept to a serious minimum to avoid a costume effect. That goes for animal prints as well. Think minimal, like shoes, belts or eyewear.

So, take a look around your closet, get rid of some things and add some fun things.

Remember, 60 is the new 40 as far as how we feel and look.
