Declutter your wardrobe, declutter your life

Spring is a great time to declutter your closet. As you spring clean and change out your wardrobe, it is the perfect time to get rid of things that no longer serve you.

Let’s start in the closet! Lay out everything that you wear in the spring and summer on your bed. Check for rips, stains and general wear and tear. Set aside things that aren’t perfect. Now make outfits out of what’s left.

Make sure that each clothing item has something that pairs with it – no need to hold on to that great skirt if you don’t have a cute top to match it with. The rule of thumb is that if you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it. If you’re not sure what you wore last year, a great tip is to start the season hanging everything in one direction in your closet. As you wear it and wash it, hang it in the opposite direction. Whatever hasn’t changed direction, you don’t need.

Don’t forget the belts and jewelry. Each outfit should have cute accessories that complement it. These can be interchangeable and work with more than one outfit – belts, earrings, bracelets, rings and scarves and wraps. Sometimes a great scarf can double as a wrap on a cool summer night, or you can tie it around your waist over a cute pair of jeans for a sexy, slimming look!

Now for the shoes. If they are uncomfortable, throw them away. You probably won’t wear them and you don’t need the damage that ill-fitting shoes do to your feet. A little heel always compliments the legs so go for a kitten heel if you can’t wear a higher one. Remember, if you are attending a backyard event, do not wear a pointy heel. You will sink in the grass. This is where a platform or wedge is perfect!

For those things that you’ve set aside that aren’t perfect, decide if they would be good to donate or better to throw away – and then do it!

What I like to do every year to treat myself is to decide what trend I’d like to try. Don’t spend too much – trends fade quickly – but it’s always fun to have something new and trendy for the season. It could be something as simple as a fun wrap, a cute jean jacket or even some bold statement jewelry. Remember, this is your life. You only go around once, and you deserve to treat yourself like a queen.

Now put on that crown and go out and sparkle!
