4. Johnston 11s rout CELL for District I crown

Posted

The Johnston Little League 11-year-old all-star squad put together a memorable run to a District I championship in July.

Johnston outslugged Cranston East Little League, 13-0, as it went 18-for-33 from the dish while exploding for three home runs in the title game.

Right-hander Derek Salvatore went the full five innings in the mercy-rule-shortened game, scattering five hits while allowing no runs.

With Johnston up 9-0, it used the long ball to put the game away for good, with Dylan Martins cranking a two-run homer in the fifth, followed by back-to-back solo shots from Mike LaFlamme and Cam Salois.

According to Johnston head coach Dan Salvatore, it was the team’s chemistry and camaraderie that pushed it to the top.

“They really support each other,” Dan Salvatore said. “There are no guys that think they are big stars. They are very level players that back each other up and cheer each other on. This is one of the most fun teams I have coached.”
